What is Shuai Jiao?

New York Shuai Jiao is a martial arts group that specializes in 中国摔跤 Zhōng Guó Shuāi Jiāo , also known as Chinese Wrestling.  The club was founded by the late Grandmaster  (Lǎo Shīfu) 鄭行平 Jèng Hsíng Píng (Zhèng Xíng Píng) in the early 1970's. Lǎo Shīfu Jèng was one of the top students of Great Grandmaster Cháng Dōng Shēng and assistant head instructor under him in the Taiwan Police College for 25 years.

The group was originally known as both the New York Shuai Jiao Association and the Chinese Swai Jiao Association which was passed on to his students Shīfu James Chin,  Shīfu Gavriel Ben Judah and their classmates.  Later was transferred to their students, Matthew Gelfand, Mario Polito, Harry Fontanez, Franc Gomez, Joseph Cheung, Tony Yin and Stanley Weeks. Matthew Gelfand, Mario Polito and Harry Fontanez went on to form Shuai Jiao Evolution and the other grand students created their own subsequent schools.  

In 2010, Mario Polito (who is also an instructor under Shīfu Peter Chema, adopted son of Great Grandmaster Cháng Dōng Shēng) met Shīfu 张卫东 Zhāng Wèi Dōng and started training with him.  Mario introduced Shīfu Zhāng to Matt Gelfand in 2013 and Matt started training under Shīfu Zhāng as well.  Shīfu Matt continued to train under Shīfu Gavriel Ben Judah and teach alongside Shīfu Mario and later with Shīfu Harry Fontanez over the subsequent years while spending as much time as he could with Lǎo Shīfu Jèng.  After Jèng's death in 2020, Shīfu Matt asked Shīfu Zhāng to join with them in New York Shuai Jiao while still maintaining his school https://zhangweidongmartialarts.com/. 

New York Shuai Jiao continues our grandmaster's legacy by teaching Baoding style and now incorporating/teaching the Beijing style of Shuāi Jiāo as taught by Shīfu Zhāng.
